On the uplands the wind whines and sighs,
clear bright weather for our parting now,
waves of pampas grass bending white,
stirring unforgettable memories
of the summer past and the days since then
Moments of a brief lifetime,
in the shadow of the cedar rows,
by the shore of the Inland Sea,
seated at the window of a speeding train,
a friend I have known
We have opened up our thoughts to one another,
the innermost part of our thoughts —
that transparent purity that
lights up the autumn sky ——
I will prize it as the finest thing in this world of ours
From this clear day, the day of parting, on,
Though we may never meet again,
I will never forget —-
The reality of this mutual response of heart to heart
I will continue to believe in from this moment to all time
A clear night of parting,
a cup between friend and friend,
to remember each other by, our forms reflected in it,
the moon lighting our thoughts within —-
now the autumn wind comes blowing over the uplands
