Defying Despair
The bleeding sun
Shed no tears
For the wizened man,
Whom Despair feared.
Perched over his shoulder,
Her naivety but a guise,
She poisoned his mind
With saccharine lies.
Submit, she crooned
Voice tinged in honey,
Twisting his withered limbs
She forced his fealty.
But undeterred,
he trudged forth.
Paying no heed,
As she barred him once more.
Yield, she sneered,
Fingers clenched his chest,
Blinded his eyes,
And robbed him of breath.
With only a soothing smile,
He evaded her strikes,
And resumed his trek
Under the cold, black sky.
Surrender, she howled
Desperation fuelling her might
As she grasped his beating heart,
Claws an unforgiving vice.
Yet, he embraced her,
Pitying her plight,
Dried her hopeless tears
As she wept through the night.
And intertwined,
They watched the sun rise,
Accepting her fate
She bestowed a demure smile.
Melting into his side,
A part of him she becomes
For one cannot be Resilient
Without welcoming the Despair that comes.
About the Poet
Mannat Datta is a Grade 11 student from Dubai Scholars Private School
She is an avid reader and writer of poetry, and often find myself mystified by the eloquence with which poets realise complex concepts. She has spent years exploiting every opportunity to develop her own style of poetry that personifies intangible emotions and themes such as Hope and Resilience. All with the aim to enlighten others in a way that resonates with them.
