Juki Välipakka

Vocalist Juki Välipakka is quite a rare phenomenon in Finland, a male jazz singer, and a singer/songwriter of many styles, and a skilled stage performer. He has won the critics poll of the magazine Jazzrytmit on the years nine times.

A warm barytone-voice, when singing jazz he is as good at interpreting ballads and latin as swing and fast be-bop songs. His wide vocal range ables him to use both nuanceful low register and effective falsetto.

Due to his wide stylistic range he is more than just a mere jazz singer: he has sung rhythm & blues (he plays harp and guitar, too) and has composed music for dance-theatre productions. On Ad Lib Quintet's cd Jump there is his joik-influenced composition Karhu, and he has even got he's hands (or vocal cords) on ambient/ethno-vocal improvisation in the company of British guitar-player Jason Carter.

He performs with his various jazz, rock, rhytm 'n blues, soul and blues and roots bands, and also composes for them. He also writes lyrics, and has translated many songs from english to finnish.  He has studied with such singers as Madeline Eastman, Christine Correa, Michelle Weir and, most of all, in Graz, Austria, with Mark Murphy.

Juki has also appeared on musicals: Helsinki City Theatre's production of Evita, and Järvenpään Theatre's production of Sugar (in the role of Jerry), and Åbo Swedish Theatre's production of Jesus Christ Superstar.
