Speak

by. Prof. Kithaka Wa Mberia

I will sing “SPEAK”

So that

When I’m done with speaking

I will have spoken

About the crocodile

Haughty and arrogant,

And those too scared to speak

In the farm

I proclaim that

This crocodile

Is the boulder

That despoils the farm

But say I

Though he dons

Scaly carapace

He will defy not the rope

That crushes boulders

In the farm

We have witnessed crocodiles

Who bragged

Of fearing not the farm owners

They were no match

For the farmers’ rope

When they began speaking

And the rope pulling

In the farm

If you call me an enunciator

Who loves enunciation

I will respond

I don’t seek utterances

But the crocodile

Who swanks

And the farm owners

Too frightened to speak

Cause me to speak

I will conclude, “SPEAK”

Reiterating that

When the rope

Of the farm owners

Is pulled

When they begin to speak,

The witless crocodile

Won’t fail to pronounce:

I was mistaken to swagger

Declaring

I, Crocodile

I’m already donned

With scales

To silence the speechless

In the farm

When they decide to speak

Amba

Nitaimba “-AMBA”

Hivi kwamba

Nitamaliza kuamba

Nitakuwa nimeamba

Juu ya mamba

Mwenye kujigamba

Na wacheleao kuamba

Katika shamba

Natangaza kwamba

Huyu mamba

Ndiye mwamba

Unaoharibu shamba

Bali naamba

Ingawa amejipamba

Kwa magamba

Hatashinda kamba

Ivunjayo miamba

Kwenye mashamba

Tumeshuhudia mamba

Ambao walijigamba

Kutoogopa wanashamba

Hawakushinda kamba

Ya wanashamba

Walipoanza kuamba

Na kuvuta kamba

Katika shamba

Ukiniona muamba

Apendaye kuamba

Nitajibu kwamba

Sitafuti kuamba

Bali mamba

Mwenye kujigamba

Na wanashamba

Waogopao kuamba

Wamenifanya kuamba

Nahitimisha “-AMBA”

Nitakariri kwamba

Ivutwapo kamba

Ya wanashamba

Waanzapo kuamba

Jahili mamba

Hatakosa kuamba:

Nilikosea kujigamba

Nikiamba kwamba

Mimi mamba

Tayari nimejipamba

Kwa magamba

Kuzima wasioamba

Katika shamba

Waamuapo kuamba!
