About the Poet

Soham is a student from Dubai Gem Private School is returning to the Poetic Heart again after being selected last year. The best way to express a person’s feeling is through poetry. This is exactly the reason why Soham started writing poems.

He has been writing poems from the age of 10 and poetry writing has become a means of recreation for him.

In Soham’s opinion, friendships are crucial in all realms of life. Especially, having that one true friend who would stick by you at all times is exactly what you need to survive trying times.

A True Friend, A Priceless Treasure!
(The Poetic Heart 2017)

A punch to my gut and a thrash to my will,

My heart sank back in to its cavern making me ill.

A deafening uproar hijacked my ear as my head spun in all the spheres

Had my life come to an end?

The power of this word was unknown to me until it lashed out at me.

My world spun in front of my eye. Was it the first step to my demise?

Isolating myself, I wept until I had, not a single tear to shed.

Thoughts bolted through my mind as adverse images flashed across my eyes;

Of losing my friends, fear of seclusion and the abysmal chemotherapy sessions.

Alas! I had cancer.

After days of conflict, I made the grueling revelation to everyone around me,

My so called friends fled and scattered like ants under attack,

My world crumbled around me, a gruesome onslaught!

Are these the true faces of people?

But there was one true friend who stood by through this treacherous journey.

Day in and day out, she would accompany me to the doctor’s appointments

Ready to share my pain, calming me after the severe disillusionments

Fortunately, I had a trustworthy friend.

After a roller coaster of emotions and a whirlwind of obstacles,

I had managed to survive the ‘cancer’.

Nonetheless, traversing this rocky road was no easy feat

But your presence made a difference.

The Last Punch
(The Poetic Heart 2016)

A demented match began One sunny, yet dark, dismal morning,

The gong was heard and the punches rolled,

A tactful uppercut to the muscular jaw

And a combination of a hook followed by a crafty jab

From the chin to the palpitating, bare chest.

And then suddenly a head-butt, brawny crosses to the head

Abrasively pushing him to the jagged ropes that created

Fine scarlet marks of terror on the calloused back.

Low blows after low blows, committing horrendous, heinous and bloodcurdling fouls.

An Unmoderated match, with no one to stop, no referees and no judges.

Red Crimson drawn from the vulnerable parts of the head and wounds cut wide open,

Blood trickled down the furrows of the face, like tears from the corner of our eyes

Along with salty droplets of sweat, oozing from every pore of the skin,

Yet no one stepped up to break it off, no technical knock outs.

Continuing until the last breath of air exits the lungs,

However, it is the innocent civilians and their families that suffer.

The people, nowhere to escape and every corner they turn, a punch awaits.

The bruises and wounds scar them all,

With death, loss of a loved one, and even a mother separated from her innocent baby.

Yet there is no one to break it off.

Where are those days of warmth and harmony that united the world peacefully?

Casualties, injuries and lacerations surround us all,

Enticing structures that once stood tall now turned in to rubble and dust.

Destruction has taken over us all like a devil from another world.

This must immediately cease, or it wouldn’t be long before everything is demolished,

And carcasses, debris is all that will remain.

There is a need to look back and reflect upon our actions,

And the need to understand that violence is not the path to peace.

Is everything really fair in love and war?
