I See You
I see it here. Everyday.
The epitome of life and death.
They intertwine in a strange way.
It breaks me to see each last breath.
But the end isn’t all I see,
Not only loss and despair lurks in this room.
I don’t just see souls set free.
I also see lives triumph and bloom.
Let me begin.
Electric lights yet shadowed
By a surprisingly dark atmosphere.
Parallel beds fill this abode.
Wires and pipes congest here.
And on each bed lies the body and soul
Of a human, victorious with each breath.
Each beat of his heart is the whole
Reason he does not succumb to death.
Some on ventilators, their souls don’t yet give in.
And outside this room I hear blessings, whispers and weeps.
Prayers implored and cried by kin.
And the silence is often haunted by machine beeps.
Every infant in this unit,
Whose story hasn’t yet been seen
Has will power and a mighty spirit,
And the virtues it holds in between.
The old man that lies here
Has been through thick and thin.
There is no reason I must fear.
This time, he won’t have it within.
This lady that yearns to run again,
Has walked past her former pain.
Why must I doubt, then?
That this time she may not sustain.
This is no consolation to another.
I have treated so many over the years.
So when I stand here i n front of my brother.
I would like to take away all my fears.
When I look at him now,
I see his soul and selfless grace.
I see him fighting somehow,
For the life he should get to embrace.
I say these words with expectations in my heart.
Because he is deserving, and it is unfair.
Because I cannot stand being apart,
This pain of loss I cannot bear.
But I know. This I cannot control.
I know he will make it through.
So now I love and cherish him for his soul.
And I whisper, ” I see you.” -
