Icarus, rising

By Priyanshi Joshi

When Icarus slowly
Began to
Fall
People blamed it on his hubris
They said his endeavors were fruitless
Yet he saw both the height of the heavens
And the depths of the ocean
His life was a small sacrifice
For who wouldn’t give everything up in an instant
To feel truly alive for the first time
In that one moment, he was more a man than ever before
Because what is more man than to be on top of the world
And still feel like it is not enough
What is more man than the lust for immortality
Even when there’s nothing to left to live for
Maybe he did fly too high
But indeed he flew
Felt the divine warmth of the sun
Felt the wax melt his skin
Felt pleasure and horror at the same time
An angel, trying to break free from his old life
Everyone remembers his fall
But what about the courage it took to fly
He was imprisoned because of his father
And each morning he woke up trapped in the blue sky
The sun was his only escape
He reached too far high
And fell too far down
With saltwater lungs
Skin of wax
And a sun-kissed soul
He was not merely a mortal anymore
He was a son of
the Earth
the Skies
the Sea
Icarus
‘the boy who flew too close to the sun’
People forget that even before he fell
He was a person
A clever mind and delicate fingers;
he was gifted
His mind, a battlefield
His life, obsolete
Yet he couldn’t be legendary
He stayed a myth
But did Daedalus cry
with repentance for his son,
Or did he cry
over the incompetence of his own
creation?
