Hamza Qinawy
Hamza Qinawy Ramadan is an Egyptian poet and writer. He was a regular writer at Dubai Cultural Magazine, 2010 – 2015 and at Turath Magazine, issued by Sultan Bin Zayed’s Cultural and Media Centre (CMC) (2016 to present). He is a member of the editorial staff of Bait Al Shi’r Magazine, issued in Abu Dhabi, Director of the Cairo office (2013) and also a member of the UAE Journalists Association and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ)
Born on January 23rd, 1977, Cairo, Hamza Qinawy completed his Bachelor of Arts, from the department of Arabic Language and Literature, Ain Shams University in 2000. His educational qualifications include a Diploma in postgraduate studies in Rhetoric, Criticism, and Comparative Literature, Faculty of Dar Al-Ulum, Cairo University (2004), Master’s in Literary Criticism and Rhetoric, with a thesis entitled The Dichotomy of the Ruler and Subjects in the Novels of Sonallah Ibrahim: A Social Study, Department of Arabic Language and Literature, Faculty of Arts, Ain Shams University (2016). PhD researcher at the department of Arabic Language and Literature, Faculty of Arts, Ain Shams University (2017), with a thesis entitled Modern Egyptian Poetry in the 1960s, A Semiotic Study.
Hamza Qinawy worked for the National Translation and Conference Interpreting Project, the Supreme Council of Culture, Ministry of Culture, Egypt. He was also an assistant to the Deputy Director of the International Sociological Association, the late Prof. Anwar Abdel-Malek, Professor of Sociology at the University of Sorbonne. He has worked as teaching assistant and lecturer at the College of Media Sciences and Communication, University of Jazeera, Dubai. He has also been the writer for Al Turath Magazine, Abu Dhabi.
Hamza has received various awards including a laureate of the Award of the General Authority for Cultural Palaces for the Best Single Poem in Egypt (2001), a laureate of Iqraa’s Cultural Award, the poetry section for the Best Collection of Poems in Egypt (2005, 2006, and 2007), a laureate of the Award of the General Authority for Cultural Palaces for the Best Collection of Poems entitled ‘On the Fingertips of Two Lovers’ (على أنامل عاشقين) (2008). He is a holder of the medal of the National Library of Algeria, a laureate of the Award of Ahmad Bahaa’ El-Deen Society for Youth Intellectual Creativity for the best book in the Arab World for his novel From the Diaries of an Egyptian Young Man.(من أوراق شاب مصري) (2010)
He has been nominated as one of the best 100 young Arab writers under the age of 40 in the bibliography published by the High Festival Institution in Frankfurt (2009). Hamza has been honoured by the Moroccan House of Poetry in 2014 and awarded the badge of Bait Al-Shi’r in Rabat for his collections of poems; His novel ;Out of Text’ (خارج النص) was chosen at the Live Stories Competition organized by the BBC in cooperation with Al Arabi Magazine. His collection of stories entitled Going out of Memory (الخروج من الذاكرة) was shortlisted in Sharjah for the Award for Arab Creativity, 2013, and was finally nominated by the Jury. He has earned a laureate of the Arab Poetry Award in Europe, 2015, organized by the Egyptian Embassy in France, in cooperation with the French Cultural Center. He received the award in Paris, in 2006
